25 October 2017 // Today we celebrate the 6th World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day. This year we are raising awareness about the importance of taking care of both the physical and mental health of people with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, and the well-being of their families and carers. That is why we call for an integrated approach to Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus care, which includes psychologists and mental health professionals.

One in four people experience mental health issues, and people with disabilities are among them. Yet the stigma surrounding both disability and mental health issues can prevent people from reaching out for support when they most need it. To change this situation, IF is creating an international network of professionals with expertise in therapy for people with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, and their families and carers. The aim of the network is to exchange knowledge and professional experience and advocate for inclusion of mental health professionals in Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus multidisciplinary clinics. Are you such an expert, or do you know such an expert, than please contact us by emailing our Deputy Secretary General Ewa Kampelmann at ewa.kampelmann@ifglobal.org.
